Kovalam Beach        

Kovalam is famous for its beaches, among the most pristine in India. Kovalam is extremely popular among westerners due to shallow waters and low tidal waves. It is also one of the oldest tourist enclave in India, which known among tourist circuit right in 1930s. Kovalam shot into limelight in the early seventies with arrivals of the masses of hippies. That started the transformation of a casual fishing village of Kerala into one of the most important tourist destinations in all India- the Kovalam beach.        Kovalam was brought to the public eye by Her Highness The Queen of Travancore Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bai decided to build a palace for herself at a rock top near the beach, as her private residence better known as Haylcon Castle. Later, in 1936, the next Queen, HH Karthika Thirunal choose this palace for her honeymoon with her newly wed husband, 1st Prince GV Raja. It was Prince G.V Raja who found immense tourist potentiality of the region and decided promote the region among state guests, by inviting Thomas Cook & Sons- UK to develop the region. The Maharaja of Travancore soon started hosting regular state banquets and accommodation of his European guests in Kovalam Haylcon Palace. This made the beach popular among European families living in nearby Madras and Bombay Presidencies as well as elite Travancore families to spend their holidays. Thus, the move helped to lay foundations of modern tourism industry in South India. Post independent India, the beach was popular among Indians and few tourists. It was 1970s, the hippie culture helped to revive the beach, with vast influx of tourists, spending their wild holidays here. When Kerala government thought of making tourism as a major industry, towards 1990s, Kovalam was the first tourist destination to be highlighted and promoted. Today its an intentionally renowned beach.

Varkala Beach

Shangumukham Beach

Shanghumugham Beach in Thiruvananthapuram is one of the main beaches in Kerala, situated just 8 km from Trivandrum city. On the Arattu day at Thiruvananthapuram images of Lord Padmanabhawamy, Lord Narasimha, and Lord Krishna are taken in procession to the Arabian sea at Shanghumugham beach. His Highness the former Maharaja of Travancore,Sri Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma, will lead the procession with the royal sword in hand, who will be escorted by members of the Royal family, armed guards, temple authorities, mounted police, and officers. After the ceremonial bath in Shanghumugham, images are taken back in procession which marks the conclusion of the festival.

Kappil Beach         

The Kappil beach sprawls across 25 acres of land, and even beyond that. The beach is a getaway owing to its location and scenic beauty, ideal for viewing the sunset and taking evening walks. The Kappil river offers a tranquil boat cruise.
Kappil is a favourite place of the National Cadet Corps and regular parasailing and adventure water sports activities are held there. The Priyadarshini Boat Club, functioning under the Thiruvananthapuram District Tourism Promotion Council, offers boating on the backwaters.

Alapuzha Beach

Marari Beach

Thangasseri Beach           

This beach is situated at a distance of about 5 kms from Kollam town. There are many historical sites that you can explore while at the Thangasseri Beach. You can see the ruins of an Old Portuguese fort and churches built in the 18th century. One of the major attractions is the Thangasseri Lighthouse, open to all visitors. Thirumullavaram Beach         

Thirumullavaram beach is located in Kollam district. The beach is very beautiful with calm waves and golden colored sand. The cool blue color sea is liked by all the tourists and it makes it a famous tourist destination. This beach is ideal for morning walk and you can have a glimpse of the fisherman getting ready to catch fishes. The water is shallow and so people can take bath in this sea. This beach is a favorite for both the locals and the tourists.

Around 2 kms inside the sea there is the Nyayarazhcha Para which means Sunday Rock. It is visible well during times of low tide. There is also a Vishnu temple near to the beach. The beach takes its name from the Vishnu temple close to the beach where thousands gather every year to pray for their dear departed on the new moon day in the month of Karkataka of the Malayalam era (July-August). Folklore has it that the temple was one of the seven established by Parasuram who raised Kerala from the sea.

Cherai Beach

Munambam Beach      

Situated at the northern end of Cherai Beach, Muziris Golden Beach popularly known as Munambam Beach, is a perfect place to enjoy your weekend. This stunning beach is in the village of Munambam which is a fishing harbour located at a distance of 5kms from Cherai and 30kms from Kochi. It is the place where river periyar joins the Arabian Sea and one can enjoy the spectacular view of sunset, watch local fishermen in their traditional canoes, fishing and canoe rides. The beach filled with fine grained sand, is adorn with numerous Chinese fishing nets. It is one of the few places where one can see dolphins.
Munambam Beach seemed to have come up due to a Pulimuttu (a 1 km long bridge made of stone stretching in to sea) which was constructed in the area. According to a scientific report, it is due to this that the flow of the waters had changed, paving way for the formation of a new beach in the area.

Muzhupilangadu Beach             

Muzhappilangad beach of Kannur is one of the longest beaches of Kerala. It is situated at a distance of 15 kilometers from Kannur. The Muzhapilangad beach is the only drive-in beach of India. Bekal Fort Beach          

Location: About a kilometre from Bekal Fort, about 16 km south of Kasaragod on the national highway, Kasaragod district, north Kerala. Beypore Beach          

Beypore Beach is located at the mouth of the Chaliyar River at a distance of mere 10 km to the south of Kozhikode or Calicut in Kerala. It was earlier famous for the Ship Building industry. Beypore was one of the most important port and fishing harbor of Kerala during ancient times. The place was an important trade and maritime center for merchants from Western Asia. Uru, the traditional Arabian trading vessel, was constructed at the boat-building yard of Beypore. Beypore also has a magnificent bridge built entirely of stone. Kappad Beach         

Kappad beach - the place where Vasco da Gama created history by sailing in and landing on the 27th of May, 1498. Kappad, located about 16 km from kozhikode town. Kappad, or Kappakadavu as it is locally called, is the gateway to the Malabar coast. Vasco da Gama discovered the path to India from Europe, thereby opening a new page in the history of India. His discovery led to the begining of trade between India and Europe. The Arabs, and then others, were first attracted to the Malabar coast by its Spices and Richness. To the tourist, however, this little sea faring town is a haven. The best route to Kappad is along the backwaters.

Yet the only thing which reminds you of this great historic moment is an inscription in a small stone monument, which decrees - "Vasco da Gama landed here, Kappakadavu, in the year 1498" and Kappad, called Kappakadavu by the local people, is untouched by any commercialization.

Kappad has witnessed many such landings. Kozhikode was the most important trade centre of the Malabar region and the Zamorins who ruled this mightyland were powerful and shrewd. A Sprawling Rock that Protrudes into the Sea with 800yr old temple set on the top, like a crown on a queen’s head -is an interesting attraction of the Beach.

Meenkunnu Beach

Meenkunnu Beach which is an extension of Payyambalam beach, is situated in Azhikode village in Kannur district. The word ‘Meenkunnu’ is composed of two Malayalam words ‘Meen’ which means fish and ‘kunnu’ which means a small hill. It is a beautiful and peaceful beach with golden sand. It is a small beach and is so not crowded by the tourists. This beach is an uncrowded beach and a tourists' paradise. It is with golden sand and surf and attractive one. It is 12 km from Kannur. The beach is a tourist paradise with golden sand & surf. The beach is 12kms. from Kannur. The name of the beach is derived from the Malyalam Language where Meen means fish and Kunnu means hill. This beach attracts a lot of tourists with its beauty. Meen Kunnu beach is an expansion of Payyambalam Beach which is located two kilometers from the new rewritten of Kannur.

Padinjarekara Beach

Padinjarekara beach is situated near Ponnani in Malappuram district. This beach is a confluence of the Bharathapuzha, Tirur River and the Arabian Sea. So it is quite famous. Tourists are attracted towards this beach due to its beauty. The beach has clear white sand which is bordered by palm trees. It is considered to be a virgin territory and it is beautified by lagoons, rocks, natural harbor etc. Padinjarekara beach is famous for its bird watching. Also offers a spectacular view of the confluence of the Bharatha Puzha, the Tirur Puzha and the Arabian Sea.

Payyambalam Beach

Payyamblem is one of most famous beach in Kerala, located 2 km away from kannur town is one of the beautiful beaches in the state of Kerala. The Payyambalam beach is a popular picnic spot of the local people and holds much potential for development into a tourist resort.

The main attractions of this beach are the well laid out gardens and the massive landscaped sculpture of mother & child erected by noted sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman. Quiet, secluded, beautiful, this enchanting sandy beach bordering Kannur is famous as the mortal remains of Swadeshabimani Ramakrishna Pillai, A.K. Gopalan, Pamban Madavan and K.G. Marar are laid to rest near this resort.

Nearby is Ezhimala, the capital of the ancient Mooshika kings, considered to be an ancient historical site. It is a conspicuous, isolated cluster of hills, forming a promontory.

A flourishing seaport and centre of trade in ancient Kerala, it was one of the major battle fields of the Chola-Chera war of the 11th century.

There is a local belief that Lord Buddha had visited Ezhimala. An old mosque believed to contain the mortal remains of Shaikh Abdul Latif, a Muslim reformist is also located here.

The hill is noted for rare medicinal herbs. Bordered by sea on three sides, Ezhimala is set to occupy a prominent place in the Naval history of the country, consequent to the proposal for commissioning the Naval Academy here

Valapattanam Beach

This beach is situated less then ten kilometers from Kannur Town, in this place you can find some of the most beautiful beaches. The town as well is very well known for its logging industry. This places is a heaven for people who adore beaches, in this place you can also see the ways the timber transportation across the stream. The town is located in the northern part of the state, and it belongs to Kannur district. The places also have some historical significance, King Soloman’s ships anchored to collect timber which he used to build the temple. On his trip he also took back lots of spices. The place is till date leading in timber industry. This small town has a big recognition for its timber trade through out kerala state. The name Villapattanam actually means Big Town in Malayalam Language, it got its name as it was a major route for trading in the history. However now it is famous among the beach lovers. In this place you can actually see the ancient transportation methods of timber, where pieces of timber are allowed to float on the stream and is collected later on the other end of the stream.

Vallikunnu Beach

Vallikunnu beach lies in Malappuram district. It is a very beautiful beach which is covered by coconut trees. Ezhimala Beach

At an altitude of 286 m and 55 km from Kannur is Ezhimala, which has fascinating scultured stone pillars scattered all over the beach.

Carved Stone Pillars, an ancient Burial chamber and an ancient Cave can be seen at the foot of the hills. The Hills are noted for rare medicinal herbs. Furthur uphill is an ancient Mosque.

Fascinating Sculptured stone pillars are scattered all over the place. Bordered by the sea on three sides, Ezhimala Beach is poised to occupy a significant niche on the naval history of India when one of the largest naval academies is commissioned here. A naval academy is being developed here in Ezhimala. Prior Permission is required for entry in Ezhimala Beach. The climate of the state, as in the most of the other part of India, is tropical. The summer comes to the state in April and continues for the next four months. The maximum temperature during this season is around 33°C. Monsoon touches the state in June and remains there till September though not much difference in temperature can be felt. Winter is from October to January and temperature drops a bit. The weather is never too chilly in Kerala.
